A 1926 Aveling & Porter eight-ton piston-valve compound, 11463, was on display at the Shrewsbury Steam Engine and Vintage Vehicle Rally – its first public appearance following an 18-month restoration.

The work was carried out by Brian Allison Engineering of Whixall, Shropshire, on behalf of owner, John Sankey, of Ratlinghope, also Shropshire.

Originally supplied to Newcastle-under-Lyme RDC before moving on later in life to Thomas Foden, and then properly into preservation with Dick Wood who kept the engine in a yard with other engines near Crewe.

He carried out some repairs 35 years ago but gradually the bushes grew around it. In 2010 the engine was taken to Brian’s where it was fully refurbished. There will be more about the show in the next issue of Classic Plant & Machinery.
